Creative Reuse or Upcycling
Upcycling, also known as creative reuse or creative recycling, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products.
The Difference Between Upcycling and Recycling
Upcycling is more energy-efficient than recycling. Recycling takes waste products, breaks them down (destroying them), then forms them into something new. Upcycled products are never destroyed. Their materials are used as is in the new product.
Why Upcycle?
Upcycled products conserve energy, as well as air, water, and other natural resources. It is one of many sustainability strategies we use to help close our loop on waste.
Upcycled Organic Latex in Our Pillows
Our Avocado Green Pillow, Avocado Mini Pillow, and Toddler Pillow stuffing is made with GOLS organic certified latex rubber — upcycled from the excess GOLS organic certified latex that is discarded after cutting the latex foam to make our Green and Vegan mattress cores — and a renewable organic plant fiber from the Kapok tree. We "cross cut" the latex into noodle-like strips. The process is performed on-site in our Los Angeles factory.
